Im in several worlds and in many of them Im in topguilds. You would be surprised how few of them pay their way up. My experience is the top players are super active, thats how they get to be on top and how they stay on top. Being active yourself and being in a guild thats likewise active makes all the difference. Sure buying some resources, especially starting up in a new world, makes a difference, but it all evens out eventually.
Ive never heard of any guild rejecting a player because he/she didn't spend money on the game... On the other hand I know big guilds reject too small players. But it all comes down to activeness. You wont grow fast enough if you only log on every other day.
