With gold you're either paying for resources or speedups, as far as building goes. If you cancel a building ***ignment you do get the resources back, but as you used your gold to purchase those resources, you don't get it back.

I believe you don't get refunded for the gold.

If I pay gold to build something in the city hall and later cancel, do I get back gold, resources, or nothing at all?
