I use gold strictly for the first week in a new world. I do this because it maximizes productivity so I can become a stronger player in a region. I don't do it for the leaderboards just so you know, I prefer to become a powerful force early on and then I stop using gold on that world. I do agree that gold is expensive but I think the benefits (in this case) out way the negatives. You get some things for a week that can increase your gameplay by heaps, such as the building queue extender or the resource production increase things. However in would be nice if they increased the amount of gold to be brought: $5.49 = 200, $10.49 = 400, $20.99 = 750, $51.99 = 1500, $109.99 = 3000 (maybe, just a long shot really).
