You got a Sentry on the wall fighting 10 Knights on the ground outside the city. Does that Sentry kill all 10 Knights? Or does one of those 10 knights smoke that sentry?

The wall adds a base number of defense to your city, so if a group attacks, they will lose a certain number of units depending on luck, morale, etc. And the defensive effectiveness of your units inside the wall is bolstered by a percentage depending on wall size. Seems pretty fair to me. Also, this allows you to take a city with scholars while not having to rebuild the wall (although the chances of your scholar slipping and falling while climbing the wall are worrisome). My 2 cents.

I don't think anything except ballistas should be able to attack men inside the city until the walls come down.
