I feel like sending out troops to "ambush" is pointless: you lose the wall defense bonus, and the result of the battle will still be the same: if you stop their force, you lose some troops. If you don't, you lose all your troops, and whatever resources they haul from your city. Now, if allies/guild members could do the same... Then again, they could just support you and gain the bonus of your wall. Seems like something that wouldn't really be used.

Hmm, Though I heard this suggestion before, I just thought of some devious tactics.

If you send out all your forces to counter/ambush/cut off incoming troops. The enemies next door can attack your city while it's empty.

There should be away were we can send a attack before it hits the city like for example someone sends a attack there half way to my city then i send a attack and meet them half way and defeat them they cant come to my city
