Our first design for speed worlds had an unlimited capacity for participant entry; however, that lag you sometimes experience in the current speed worlds is due to the increased amount of actions made by users in the speed world. Having hourly worlds created with more than 30 players in them would make for a pretty horrible experience.
Another reason for keeping the worlds smaller is to increase the amount of tension between players, as larger worlds would yield a greater likelihood that players run into inactive cities and steamroll their section without ever running into any real competition. With the current size of speed worlds, even if there are only 2 players active in them, they will most likely come into conflict with each other by the end of the speed world.
The longer register time is also tricky when it comes to inactivity, finding suitable timezones, cancelations and refunding, etc.
A single speed world with a greater cap that allows for entire guilds to enter may be manageable in the future, if done only once in a while. I doubt it'll come out before tournaments start, as they are basically underway, but I will definitely take that suggestion into account for the future. In the meantime, I would be pretty interested to hear from you, your guild, and anyone else interested in the idea of planning a massive speed-world.
