I was able to actually get in, but it times out more than it responds still... so back to normal

So since Amazon's issue seems to be just with the US-East-1D zone, shouldn't you just have been able to move it all and restart it in a new zone? I mean if it's out for an hour (maybe two) no big deal, but after that you should be moving to a different zone... There are places I need to conquer dang...
