I'm not changing my phone I'm just gonna update ita version that's all.. It's the same thing right?

I'm about to upgrade my phones version, my carrier is Verizon.. They said if I upgrade my phone it has to be master reset first.. And that means all my personal data including the game will erase.. How can I upgrade my phone and get my valor account back will all my cities troops ect..?
