What does distance to a city have to do with anything?

Is it better to attack farther cities?
I read that some ppl said they conquer a far city first, why? Just so your closer to more cities?

What if a barbarian city is like 2k, how many scouts should I send? I'm pretty worried that I just sent all my troops to their death, n kinda irritated that the game doesnt explain more.
