I sent out three merchants to trade only 1 is returning I had 4 to begin with

I know this may sound silly but if someone is on their way to attack you what's the best way to defend , I guess you can't go out to meet their army .do you just sit tight and hope I am not sure, sorry if I'm being dumb I'm a noob

When attacking do you actually see the soilders attack , that would be brill?
