Against barbs, the rams are pointless, and the ballistas just cause damage to the city - bad if you want to take it over.
Against other players, especially with high walls, the ballistas and rams are invaluable.

EDIT: seriously, ba.lls is removed by filter?

Try play around with the simulator (access it in the Rally Point).
I found it helped a lot in understanding the basics.

Parking scouts

Would be nice to be able to "park" scouts outside a city and have them report activity. Let's see a real example: City B is 1 hour away from the scout's home city. I send 100 scouts to "park" outside City B, with instructions to report back every 1 hour. Every hour, a scout leaves the "parking" zone...
