When upgrading a unit I've noticed a red a blue shield with an associated number. What does wash shield mean?

Gold is too expensive! Charge for the game after the first 2 weeks. MANY would pay. Please consider to make worlds where you CAN NOT spent gold. I totally agree with this idea.
