I can't confirm this 100%, but I can say with certainty after much ram-on-ram action, I have noticed NO defensive effect rams have on the attacking rams during their first-strike.

I believe the defense value of the ram is simply added into the battle equation during infantry/horse stage of battle.

Think before you speak. If you were able to stack scholars there'd be no reason to have loyalty or loyalty regen. If you want a more simple game, feel free to design one yourself.
