Losing troops, why?

Why do I lose a few troops when the defending barbarian city has no defenders?

These cities have a minimum defence level irrespective of incoming troops.\
You will always lose one or two against a barb city.

Portal > ? (Question Mark - Upper right of the screen) > Support > Mail Icon

And sometime You will lose 21 units like me. Those barbarian city must have some old ladies beating your knights with a stick !

Barbs also level up their walls.

your troops are dieing on the walls as they are a defense for a city. If you are farming a barb remove walls troops will not die then

Cities still have a small defense value even with zero walls.

if there is no wall and zero troops you should not have any deaths. I do it all the time
