When the inevitable time comes when someone is trying to take your city with scholars, what is the best way to repel them is it sheer numbers of defensive units or are you doomed?

TheGhost is right, but then again it also depends on how many cities are attacking and how many troops they are sending. if attacks are coming from several people then you better hope that you have cities that are close enough to the target and that your guilds mates are online at the moment. And yes, numbers in defense do count, and also what you are using as defense.
