Gold is earned via iTunes with a credit card or gift certificate. It cost real money

No, that's not the only way. If you wait until you have resources then you could upgrade for free. But if you don't want to wait then you buy upgrade which is alot faster. (In other word, you don't have to wait at all)

Lol no silly. U upgrade with resources. But u can cheat is just buy ur way through the game

so using gold to upgrade or just use gold to buy resoruces and use resources to upgrade is cheaper?

let's say for example, we need 200 gold to upgrade city hall to level 15. but resources is about 2000 tress, 1500 lumber and about 1800 iron.
and there is a purchase all resources at 25 gold, so 1000 trees and 1000 lumber and 1000 iron for 25 gold.

so which do you guys think is cheaper?

using gold to upgrade or using gold to buy resources then using resources to upgrade it?

Hehe wrong interpretation bro !
Gold is a tool to speed up ( time ),
Buy reaiurces and other shop's items.
But u can't speed up using resources. So for sure buying resources by gold is faster. But if u don't use gold too to speed up. The update time will remain the same.
The ways to speed up the building time:
* shop via gold
* 15mins via amulet ( fortune )
