Why am I not allowed to support my neighbors in their time of need (a.k.a. being attacked)?

I recognize the value of the guilds and the communities they foster among the players, but forging friendships with neighbors via messaging, supplies, and military aide makes sense too. After all, I'm a pinch, I 'd rather help was a few minutes away rather than a few hours.

I always wondered that myself you should beable to support anyone that you want. Did you post this in the suggestion thread also?

This is more of a feedback/suggestion, but we used to allow this. It resulted in some exploitation-so now you can only support your guild mates.
