Curently I log in and send out about 80-100 attack waves every 2-3 hours on barb or inactive player cities to speed up resource production. THis is becoming more of a c**** each day compared to the start of the game when it was easy with smaller troop counts and only 1 city.

Does there come a point when farming becomes obsolete?

Once you get you resoures maxed in a few cities you won't have to farm at all or very little.
