Random battle results

I apologize if this has already been asked - I'm sure it has but I did search for it and couldn't find anything.

My battle results seems to be very random. I attacked a barbarian city yesterday with about 15 lancers and 5 beserkers and lost nothing, even when I had negative luck.

Today, I attacked the same city with 100 lancers, 33 sentries, and about 15 beserkers. I still have 100% loyalty and I had +24% luck. And yet I lost about 20 assorted men.

This is a huge random swing. The barbarians had no troops in their city. Is there something I'm missing? This doesn't seem right.

Walls. Walls are capable of killing troops in your force as they do have a basic defence value. Just send rams or ballistae to destroy the wall. FYI loyalty has no impact on combat, you probably meant morale.

Tooltip he stated there were no troops. Most likely a wall was built.

Strange though, the wall would have to be L8 to do that much damage.
And if he had previously attacked it without any losses, it would have had to be L0 then. This is per the Battle Sim.
Each barb does have a "personality", or a certain building it levels up faster than others. 8 levels in a day, though, is a lot.

OP, how long has the world been active?

I've had the same thing, attacked a barb city no problems. Left it a while attacked it with over 250 troops no one came back. How are you supposed to tell if a city is a serious threat. I really cannot make sense of the system?
