Based upon my experience, I think the level goals should be higher, and some building requirements are ignored in ajw's goals.
I put together a building level goal list that allows for troop building before getting the academy, completes all buildings in the city, and does all of this in 30 days or less.

Yeah it most certainly shouldn't take a person that long to reach those goals. The most important thing is to be constantly farming in the beginning. In the first couple of days it helps to reach lvl 5-10 of each of the buildings that don't take very long to build for the quest resources, but after that it's all about farming.
I, personally, don't see much use for zerks for farming - lance/sent fill the need until I am able to build knights (best early game farming unit hands down).

Just a quick info note for newer players who aren't aware - these are the reasons to farm with the following units:
Lancers: cheap and second highest carrying capacity per farm space
Sentries: cheap in the lumber department (they're great to build when you have excess iron) and have the highest carrying capacity per farm space
Knights: quickest unit in the game and tied with lancers for second highest carry capacity per farm space (although they are a bit pricey, they're most certainly worth it)
I know this is common sense for most - Im just throwing this out there for people who are new.

Honesty, these guides take forever a key to getting resources without wasting money is twitting. I made a junk twitter and now I get double the resources from quests. Also people who say iron mine isn't important don't know what their talking about. Forge takes more iron than anything so does forge research so don't listen to these guys make ironmine same level as other buildings
