Defending my city

I'm so lost on what troops are good for what. I guess what I need to know is what are the best troops to have to just defend my city. I'd really hate to lose it after putting in all this time in building it.

You need a strong wall the higher the better also sentries and lancers are best for defence , if you go to your barracks in city and click on it , then click the ? Mark at top right it gives you a run down of unit strength etc . Oki doki

I did that it says guardians have the best. Is it a amount of troops thing?

It's not only the amount of troops that counts but also the sort of troops and wether you want to use them for attacking or for defences.
I take it that you also scrolled down at that '?' page as to where you will find some more info.

Yes but if your new these take a long while to develop my advice even though I'm new is build up your wall to say level 5 to 10 then your lumbermill quarry about three levels quicker than iron then build upto about 150 of sentries lancers and be seekers , then concentrate on knights , about 50 then attack only barb cities at first .

you should also build up your city hall, barracks & stable that way you build your troops more quickly

My wall is at 24 and resources at 23 city 25 so my buildings are in good shape. My troop count is low I just want a good defense before I start a offense.

Try play around with the simulator (access it in the Rally Point).
I found it helped a lot in understanding the basics.
