When attacked?

If your attacked and not logged on will your troops automatically defend your city or do you have to command them?

The troops will automatically defend the city. We do know people need to sleep at some point during the day.

About that part, when the players are not online.. Isn't it possible that, say for example, my city can get conquered while I'm not online? Wouldn't that be unfair?
I imagine, that even with a level 20-25 Wall and perhaps 300-400 troops each (I mean all, from lancers to ballistas, and all at research level 1), someone who has more troops can conquer my city while I'm not online.

You can be conquered all the time, and many people try to attack when the enemy is sleeping 
So when u are in a guild its populare to send "trip wires" to some of your friends. Small suppor units to other cities because then you get a report if you support is under attack. And others will be noticed when u are under attack and can send support fast.
