Troop Recruitment Type & Levels

I am new to this although have played a very very similar game on Facebook.

I really like the Ajw early day building guide but wondered if anyone has any advice on troop levels required in the early days - numbers and type. I want to be effective but want to make sure I am recruiting the right amount and not wasting resources and time.
