Ballistas have a higher attack than rams. Ballistas have a higher infantry defense than rams. Each, by eight times as much.
Ballistas, however, only cost 2 more population and 50 more gold.

If your intent is to only take down a city's walls, is there any advantage to using rams over solely ballistas?

Rams hit before your troops so not as many get killed ballistas hit after.

Thanks. The in-game doc was lacking, and I wasn't sure if the hit-before applied to ballistas too. It stated a difference between them in the ballista text in a way that made me believe the shared that trait.

go for rams. using the amount of rams that would be the same amount of ballistas say like 400 rams = 600 balistas in population rams will do the job better and cost less. balistas are only good for demolishing buildings. but its kind of pointless if your going to conquer than you'll have to rebuild those buildings. and if your not conquering why attack and waste troops lol

I consider ballistas the "trolling" unit of Valor.
