Gold usage

Two strategy related questions:
1) for those who use gold, how do you use it most effectively?
2) I can't figure out how to use the resource boost... Any help?

If I'll use gold I'll take Aurora's blessing for the ressources the best solution is farming

The resource boost is on the lower right side of the screen under Store/Specials/...
