New game modes?

What about creating a world that is a competition to reach 1 million points and nothing else, no attacking, just pure building strategy. You can make the beginners protection never disappear and just make sure the barbarian:human ratio is good enough so there are enough barbarian cities to reach the goal

I think 100-1000 people worlds would be the best way to go, guilds of 10 people. The pace of this game is my biggest concern

King of the hill? Everyone starts in far away areas (r1) etc and these people have to capture a specific city in r22 which is well deffended. After that they will have to deffend that city for 5 days(example)

A world with no guilds and you can only attack people within so many points of yours.
No restriction on attacking a higher ranked player but that will void your protection if they are greater then the points allowed and you will be open to attack from anyone regardless the level.
This will force you to attack everyone basically to be the last man standing.
