I think it would be helpful to have scattered over the map public marketplaces where players can trade overproduced resources for either different resources or gold ,to protect themselves from being raided and have an option to earn gold in the game.

Yes there should be away to earn coins without money

That would mean players with the most cities can buy the most gold, which would extremely unbalanced.
