Ok. Multiple points here.

1. Troops cannot die from walking. They die in battle. This brings me to point 2.

2. The reason you lost those troops is because every city has a base defense with or without a wall. You will lose troops when you attack a city. Even if you attack a city with no walls, if your morale and/or luck is low you still will lose troops. This brings me to my next point.

3. Always send extra troops with your scholars or they WILL die. Every time. Think of it as an escort if you want. Each wave needs an escort. This leads me to my next point.

4. Everybody I know sends five different scholar waves. Do not send multiple scholars in one wave. Nothing extra will happen. So send multiple ones. 4 is a minimum. I send 5 waves. This ensures a capture. Some even send 6. Plus multiple waves back-to-back ensures loyalty can't recover enough. This brings me to my final point.

5. If you decide to not send waves, check the world's loyalty recovery rate. For example if the rate is 2 per hour and you are an 8 hour trip away, that's 16 recovered on the troops return and 16 more on the travel back. That's 32 total. This is more than one scholar hit. So it would be worth it in that scenario. So waves is really the best, but if you decide not to do waves, check loyalty recovery rate, assume your scholar hit will only take 20 away (this is the minimum. If nothing else, this provides room for error), and do the math. And ask your guild for help if you must. People are willIng to help you lower the loyalty.

Hope that helped!
