Valor city data dump or API

Postby oOSOo » Fri Jan 27, 2012 3:50 pm

It would be fantastic if playmesh provided an hourly data dump of basic city information or an API so the community could build tools to help manage an empire. Data that I want to receive on a per populated coordinate basis:

TYPE: Player | Barbarian
VALUE: 6,500P
PLAYER: Playername (if TYPE = Player)
GUILD: Guildname (if TYPE = Player & Player is guilded)

Example workflow
1) Select basic data for all cities in world 35
2) Write data to a file in JSON format (compress if you want)
3) Community downloads file at Playmesh website.
4) Repeat every hour

I feel this would benefit playmesh in the following ways:
1) reduce load on servers because fewer people would be scrolling around on a tiny map (phone or tablet). People, at least the most active players, would be utilizing community-built sites that consume city data
2) by allowing the community to build tools it offloads development effort

This is something we actually just discussed last week!

It is still in the very early stages but we do eventually want to do something like this.

Edited out the link because I don't want people clicking on it and wondering why it doesn't work.

Fair enough.

On a side note, am I allowed to write software that performs HTTP POSTs to your servers for retrieval of map data? If that is allowed then I don't need the data dump since you effectively already have an API. A bit more annoying on my end, but would still allow me to develop tools at this point.

No, please don't create anything that points to our servers.

It is something we want to do in the future but not ready yet.

Great idea, i believe most us have not see what our entire world look like, should built each world as a map, on the online webpage,we can zoom in and out.

Agreed. Having an online "progression" map available would be nice. Basically for each world have a map loaded to a website that shows the entire world. Have it updated once a day (or more often if it isn't much of a burden on the servers). Players could then check that map at their leisure for planning purposes.

I've love this.

nice. have ability to click on player and have all his cities light up. this would allow planning for attacks.
man, this could be very beneficial to active players.

Did anything ever happen with this? I'd love to have access to an API, just to help better manage my cities/worlds - and any tools I build, I would of course make available to all.
