The Ultimate Scholar Bug

I attacked a player in World 76 today - single city, with less than 15K points.

According to scouting and attack reports, he had 59 scholars in his city.

He had been in a guild of 25 players, but I know for a fact that at least three of the 25 did not have scholars in his city (which had very little defence BTW, and a level 2 wall).

Now given the world is only a few weeks old, where the hell did these come from, and do I win a prize for killing 59 scholars in one shot (yes, I have the reports)?
